Russia’s military spending will almost certainly remain high, putting pressure on its public finances.
This, according to “European Truth”, is stated on Tuesday in an intelligence review of the British Ministry of Defense on the war in Ukraine.
On May 25, 2023, the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) reported that Russian military spending in 2022 increased by 9.2%, to $86.4 billion. According to SIPRI estimates, this is 4.1% of Russia’s GDP.
As British analysts have pointed out, Russia’s actual military spending is highly uncertain due to increased use of classified budget items, especially since February 2022, and lack of transparency.
“Russia has only recently resumed the publication of a breakdown of spending by item after suspending it in May 2022. It is almost certain that military spending remains high, and this is putting pressure on Russian public finances,” the British Defense Ministry said in a review.
Earlier, British analysts said that in Russia, calls for forcing society to work for the needs of the war, which is reminiscent of the Soviet approach.
