Russia’s Failed Drone Attack on Ukraine: Details & Consequences

Kyiv

In May, Russia launch an attack drone massively to Ukraine. However, the attack was deemed unsuccessful and less effective in weakening Ukraine.

As quoted detikINET from Newsweek, Russia deployed around 300 Iranian-made Shahed drones last May. According to the British Ministry of Defence, it was the most intense drone strike that took place during the war between Russia and Ukraine.

Russia’s goal in particular is to force Ukraine to spend air defense missiles to intercept the drone. However, the attack was considered a failure because the Ukrainians managed to take down at least 90% of the Iranian drones using cheap and old air defense systems, as well as using jamming.

“Ukraine can neutralize at least 90% of the incoming attack drones, mostly with older and cheaper air defense weapons and electronic jamming. Russia also seems to be trying to detect and attack Ukrainian soldiers behind the front lines. However, Russia remains ineffective in hitting dynamic targets, said the British Ministry of Defence.

Russia is reportedly receiving enough supplies from Iran to launch Shahed attack drones almost daily over Ukraine. Iran itself denies that it supplied the drones to Russia.

As well as intimidating Kyiv residents, Moscow might use these drone strikes to force Kyiv to use valuable ammunition to shoot them down as well as find out where Ukrainian air defenses are. However, this goal is considered not achieved.

Drone The Shahed costs roughly 20 times less than the missile and is considered cheap enough for Russia. This drone is manufactured in Iran. Ukraine has warned Iran that there will be consequences if it supplies air weapons to Moscow.
