PARIS, KOMPAS.TV – French President Emmanuel Macron says Russian President Vladimir Putin’s conditions for a ceasefire in Ukraine are unacceptable to anyone.

“I don’t see a diplomatic solution in the coming hours or even the next few days,” Macron told reporters in Versailles ahead of a summit of EU leaders.

The EU leaders’ summit is projected to center on Russia’s invasion of Ukraine; solutions to rising energy prices, and reducing Europe’s dependence on Russian gas and oil.

Macron said he did not see a ceasefire in Ukraine as “realistic” in the coming hours.

“I’m definitely optimistic, but I also have to be realistic,” he added.

Earlier on Thursday, Putin held telephone conversations with Macron and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz.

Speaking about Ukraine’s request to enter the European Union as soon as possible, Macron told reporters, “With a country at war? I do not think so. Should we close the door and say ‘never’? That is not fair.”

The French president said the war in Ukraine was a humanitarian, political and humanitarian tragedy. He also added that this event would lead to a complete redefinition of European architecture.

“This is a strategic and historic discussion. They will lead to, today, in the coming weeks and months, historic decisions for our Europe,” Macron said.
