One year has passed since Katerina Sukhenko joined the Ukrainian army. On Friday 14 April, the 20-year-old had his worst day. She was driving through the streets of the city of Slovyansk in eastern Ukraine when the buildings around her were hit by a Russian missile. Then one more. And one more.

Sukhenko and his colleague stopped the car and ran towards one of the nearest buildings. The door was locked. While her colleague Alina tried to get it up so they could take cover, Sukhenko turned and looked around. People nearby were injured. She wanted to help. But the attack raged on.
