Russia’s Black Sea Grain Initiative Derailment and Ukraine’s Efforts for Food Stability

“Now that Russia has derailed the Black Sea Grain Initiative, we are working to ensure food stability. And I hope many of you will join us in these efforts,” the president said.

Zelensky noted that Ukraine has already launched a temporary maritime export corridor from ports and is working to preserve land routes for grain exports.

“It is disturbing to see how some in Europe, some of our friends in Europe, are undermining solidarity with political theater, making a thriller out of grain. It may seem that they are playing their own role, but in fact they are helping to set the stage for the Moscow actor,” he emphasized .

Grain ban and lawsuit against the WTO

Let us remind you that in April Poland introduced a ban on the import of Ukrainian grain and other agricultural products, followed by other countries in Eastern Europe.

The European Commission supported them and allowed Poland, Hungary, Slovakia, Bulgaria and Romania to ban wheat, corn, rapeseed and sunflower seeds from Ukraine.

However, later the European Commission decided to lift this ban from September 15. On the same day, Poland, Slovakia and Hungary announced that they would maintain their own restrictions on the import of Ukrainian grain, despite the decision of the European Commission.

Ukraine, in turn, filed lawsuits against Poland, Slovakia and Hungary at the World Trade Organization on September 19 over the ban on grain imports.

Ukraine’s trade representative Taras Kachka said that Kiev is suing countries in the WTO, and not through its own trade agreement with the EU, because the whole world needs to see how member states behave towards trading partners and their Union.
