Russia’s attitude after being sanctioned by FIFA and UEFA: Not willing to take away their right to compete

KOMPAS.com – The Russian Football Union (RFU) takes a stand after being sanctioned by FIFA as the highest authority in world football and UEFA as the parent federation in Europe.

The sanctions from FIFA and UEFA were realized through the suspension of clubs and the Russian national team in international competitions.

The suspension became one form of criticism against Russian invasion of Ukraine which has continued to heat up in the past week since the end of February 2022.

Through the suspension, Russia’s right to compete on the international stage seems to have been taken away.

The Russian men’s national team cannot compete in playoff World Cup 2022 which is the decisive path to the finals in Qatar.

The Russian men’s national team is not the only party affected. Their women’s national team is also said to be excluded from the European Championships in England in July.

It didn’t stop there, one of the Russian clubs, Spartak Moscow, was also a victim of UEFA sanctions. They cannot continue their struggle in the Europa League.

In fact, Spartak Moscow has already confirmed a ticket to the last 16 of the Europa League and will play against the German representative, RB Leipzig.

When Spartak Moscow was ruled out of action, UEFA confirmed that RB Leipzig would automatically advance to the quarter-finals of the Europa League.

“The Europa League match between RB Leipzig and Spartak Moscow cannot take place and RB Leipzig has qualified for the quarter-finals,” read a UEFA statement. Sky Sports.

The series of sanctions forced the RFU as the parent of Russian football, to take a stand. They are not willing to take away their right to compete.

The RFU said in a statement that it would appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).

Through the appeal, the RFU requested that the Russian men’s and women’s national teams be allowed to compete again.

“The RFU will demand the restoration of the Russian men’s and women’s national teams in all kinds of football tournaments that are supposed to take part (including playoff Qatar World Cup),” said the RFU BBC

The RFU also said that the sanctions would be suspended if FIFA and UEFA rejected the proposed procedure.
