Kyiv –
The team Russia shelled a village near the city of Kupiansk in the Kharkiv region, northeast Ukraine, and about a cafe. The attack left two people dead and one injured.
Reported by AFP, officials in Kupiansk had urged vulnerable residents living near the town to evacuate earlier this month as Russia stepped up its offensive to retake the area.
“According to initial information from the medical staff, two people died in the village of Podoly as a result of the shelling, another was injured,” said the Governor of Kharkiv, Oleg Synegubov, Sunday (27/8/2023).
“The enemy attacked a civilian target – a cafe, where local residents spent the day,” he added.
The Prosecutor’s Office of Ukraine published photos from the scene showing bits of rubble and an overturned table strewn outside a building. While two people lying nearby.
“Law enforcement officials are taking priority steps to record crimes committed by soldiers of the aggressor nation,” he said.
The Russian military has claimed in recent days that it is advancing near the area, which Ukraine recaptured last year. But now it has become the target of new attacks.
Ukraine said last week that Russian shelling in Zaoskillya, an eastern suburb of Kupiansk, killed an elderly woman.
Kyiv launched a long-awaited counteroffensive to retake the occupied territories in June. But acknowledged there was heavy fighting as the country struggled to break through heavily fortified Russian positions.
