The UN General Assembly voted to remove Russia from the Human Rights Council.
Russian diplomats sent threatening notes to delegations of UN member states so that they would not vote for the suspension of Russia’s participation in the activities of the UN Human Rights Council. This was announced on Thursday, April 7 CNN.
The agency notes that Russia threatened the delegations that there would be “consequences” for these countries for supporting the resolution to suspend Russia’s participation in the activities of the UN Human Rights Council.
“It is worth noting that not only support for such an initiative, but also an equidistant position in the vote (abstention or non-participation) will be considered an unfriendly gesture,” the note said.
Recall that the UN General Assembly decided expel Russia from the Council on human rights. This was supported by 93 countries. However, 55 states abstained and 24 voted against.
