It appears that Russia has taken a fighting break in eastern Ukraine. Analysts at the US Institute for the Study of War (ISW) said the Russians have not conquered any new territory since taking Lysychansk this weekend.

There is still fighting here and there, but the lion’s share of the military is given rest to enable future major operations, the ISW says.

The Russian Defense Ministry says today that troops in Ukraine will indeed have time to recover. “The units involved in the battle are taking measures to restore their combat capabilities. They are allowed to rest and can receive letters and packages from home,” he said. news agency TASS the Ministry. This moment is also used to carry out maintenance on equipment.

Last Monday President Putin already said that the troops involved in the capture of Lugansk deserved rest. According to the ISW, this is an absolute necessity. After the heavy fighting for Severodonetsk and Lysychansk, the Russians are likely to need a “significant period of rest and recovery before being ready for large-scale military operations,” the institute said earlier this week.

Yet the fighting and bombing, albeit on a smaller scale, continues today. There have been casualties in a Russian air raid on the center of the eastern Ukrainian city of Kramatorsk, the mayor writes on Facebook, without giving details. The French news agency AFP reports at least one civilian dead and several injured.
