Russians bought nearly half of the antidepressants this year compared to last year

According to TASS, from the beginning of the year to the end of September, the Russians withdrew 8.4 million packages of antidepressants worth five billion rubles (over two billion crowns) from pharmacies.

The year-over-year increase in the number of packages sold is 48 percent and even 70 percent of antidepressant spending. The consumption of tranquilizers in Russia also increased by 44% year on year.

According to statistics, mainly people in large cities go to pharmacies for antidepressants. The largest consumption of these drugs is in and around Moscow and in Russia’s second largest city, St. Petersburg, and the Rostov region, which borders eastern Ukraine, also tops the list in antidepressant consumption.

Depression isn’t just a chemical imbalance. Antidepressants may not always work that way, the study says

Russia launched a war against Ukraine in February. In response, the EU, the United States, Britain and some other countries have adopted anti-Russian sanctions. It is unclear whether the increase in spending on antidepressants and tranquilizers is related to the war and its economic effects, the DPA agency reported on Friday.
