A court in St. Petersburg on Monday ordered the forcible hospitalization of a Russian woman who had escaped from the quarantine to which she was subjected due to a stay in China in the midst of an epidemic of the new coronavirus.

“The Petrogradski court has satisfied the complaint of the chief doctor of the Botkin hospital about the forced placement in the hospital of Alla Ilina. The decision is to be executed immediately, “said the court. Alla Ilina, 33, was escorted by bailiffs to an ambulance parked not far from the court, according to local television footage.

The young woman had been hospitalized on February 4 in Saint Petersburg (northwest) due to a sore throat, shortly after a vacation in January in China, plagued by the epidemic of the new coronavirus. Three days later, she broke in and out of the electronic lock on the door to her hospital room, then posted a detailed account of her escape on her Instagram page. The administration of Botkin hospital did not appreciate the gesture and its chief doctor filed a complaint against Ms. Ilina, asking to place her by force in quarantine.

Russia officially has no more patients with the new coronavirus on its territory after the discharge from hospital last week of the second and last confirmed case in the country, a Chinese national. The Russian authorities have taken drastic measures to prevent the spread of the new coronavirus on its territory, which to date has killed more than 1,000 people worldwide. Moscow has notably ordered the closure of its some 4,250 km of border with China, the cutting of rail links or the restriction of flights to Chinese cities.
