Russian warships asked US submarines to leave their territorial waters.
According to a report by the Russian Ministry of Defense, the pursuit began when the Russian military was holding an exercise. The warship Marshal Shaposhnikov detected the US Navy’s Virginia submarine.
“When the US submarine ignored Russia’s request to come out to the surface, the frigate crew ‘used the right way’, and the US submarine left at high speed,” the Russian defense ministry said. AFP.
Russia claims to have summoned the defense attache of the US Embassy in Russia over the incident.
“In connection with the violation by the submarine of the US Navy, the defense attache at the US Embassy in Moscow was summoned to the Russian Ministry of Defense,” the ministry wrote.
However, the US military denied the reports. They said that it did not carry out any operations in the territorial waters of Russia.
“We are sailing and operating safely in international waters,” said a spokesman for US Indo-Pacific Command, Captain Kyle Raines, without specifying the ship’s operating point.
The incident comes amid rising tensions between Russia, Ukraine and the United States.
The US itself has warned that a full-scale invasion could begin at any time. However, this claim is considered by Russian President Vladimir Putin as a mere provocation.
The Kuril Islands are located north of Hokkaido Island, Japan. This area has been under Russian control since the end of World War II.
