Russian tycoon urges West to help find ways to end Ukraine war

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia

Oleg Tinkovthe conglomerate that owns the digital bank in Russiacondemned his country’s invasion of Ukraine. He urged western countries to help President Vladimir Putin stop the war.

Tinkov said he didn’t see any benefit from the war between the two countries.

“I don’t see a single beneficiary of this crazy war,” he said CNNThursday (21/4).

Russia’s brutal attack on Ukraine occurred since 2 months ago. Thousands of Ukrainian civilians died and were injured.

The Tinkoff Bank founder claimed 90 percent of Russians were against war in an Instagram post on Tuesday.

Tinkov is one of 65 wealthy Russians who have been sanctioned by Britain for supporting Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

He owns 35 percent of the TCS group, which is the parent company of Tinkoff Bank. According to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, he has a total net worth of US$3.5 billion.

As a result of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, western countries have imposed sanctions in the form of freezing US$300 billion of Russian reserve assets. These sanctions put Russia at risk of falling into a deep recession.

Meanwhile, dozens of global companies operating in Russia have left the country. The European Union has also closed its airspace to Russian airlines and aircraft.

Tinkov’s call for peace is not the first. Similar calls were made by other Russian conglomerates.

In late February, oligarchs Mikhail Fridman and Oleg Deripaska spoke out against the conflict after Russia invaded.

Fridman, who was born in western Ukraine, wrote a letter to his staff that he wanted the bloodshed to end.

Later, in a Telegram post, Deripaska said “peace is very important! Negotiations must start as soon as possible!”

Two weeks ago, the chairman of the Russian metal company Rusal called for an impartial investigation into the killing of civilians in Bucha during the occupation of the city by Russian troops.
