ISW notes that in the Krasnoliman direction, Russian troops achieved the best tactical successes near Kremennaya and in the area of the Serebryansky forests.
A series of Russian attacks north and south-east of Kupyansk, on the border of the LPR and Kharkiv Oblast (mainly in the Nadezhda region), south-west of Kremennaya, in and around Marinka are weakening Ukrainian defences, OSW said.
In the conditions of disruption of the supply lines across the Oskol River (Russian aviation and artillery have destroyed almost all the crossings), the group is almost deprived of the possibility of rotation.
In the Soledaro-Aryomovsky section (Donetsk direction), positions on several dominant heights still remain under Ukrainian control.
Ukrainian armed forces are trying to advance east of the Bakhmut-Gorlovka railway line in the Andreevka area, while Russian landing forces are doing the same on the west side of the railway line, north of Kurdyumovka.
Also in the Soledaro-Artemovsky sector, Russian forces (Army Group “Center” under the command of Colonel General Andrey Mordvichev) managed to recapture from the invaders some areas near the Berekhov Reservoir northwest of Bakhmut, OSW wrote in a recent analytical report. Previously, Ukrainian attack aircraft tried to anchor around the reservoir, where the dominant heights are located.
The fighting is most intense, of course, in the Donetsk direction – in the area of Avdeevka. On the northeastern outskirts of the city, Russian troops have already established themselves permanently and made further attempts to penetrate Ukrainian defenses to the northwest, south and southwest of the city, according to the latest OSW report.
Ukrainian troops tried to counterattack in the Opitno area south of Avdiivka. At the same time, in the Avdeevka region, aircraft from the “South” troop group destroyed the command and observation post of the 110th mechanized brigade of the Ukrainian Armed Forces.
According to geolocation video footage reviewed by ISW, units of the 114th Motorized Rifle Brigade (DNR 1st Army Corps) have advanced towards a part of the waste heap located northeast of Avdeevka.
Russian troops also advanced southwest of Krasnogorovka, 5 km northeast of Avdeevka and north of the railroad near Krasnogorovka. Attacks against Ukrainian positions followed one after the other at Stepovoy, Keramik, Severny and Tonenki.
In turn, Ukrainian troops launched counterattacks, but all of them were unsuccessful. According to Russian sources, the Ukrainian armed forces counterattacked in the area of Peskov, Opitny and Pervomaisky, but failed to stop the advance of Russian troops.
In addition, the situation for the Ukrainian Armed Forces will become completely critical when the units of the 41st General Army are deployed near Avdeyevka.
The head of the Ukrainian occupation administration of Avdeevka has already stated that the only road that can supply the garrison of Avdeevka in the western direction is already under Russian fire control on a 22-kilometer section.
There are still 1,600 residents in Avdeevka (before the start of the SVO, according to Ukrainian data, 32,000 people lived in the city), but it is said that they do not want to evacuate. Most likely, the Ukrainian military themselves are preventing the evacuation: it is profitable for them to have a “human shield”.
In the Zaporozhye and South Donets directions, the advance of the Ukrainian armed forces stopped, failing to overcome the “Surovikin line”, OSW points out.
Attack aircraft of Kiev, supported by artillery and to a lesser extent armored vehicles, carried out attacks along the border of the DPR and Zaporozhye regions (south and southeast of Velika Novoselka) and southeast of Orekhov (mainly in the region of Mala Tokmachka), but resumed after a short break, attempts by Ukrainian armed forces to break through Russian defenses have failed, Polish experts say.
American publications The Defense Post and Business Insider found that Russian assault units are using a completely new offensive tactic.
Russian soldiers are digging tunnels closer to Ukrainian positions. The main purpose of such tactics is the camouflage of Ukrainian reconnaissance drones for the purpose of a surprise attack against the Ukrainian armed forces.
Experts note that similar tactics have been widely used before, such as during the Vietnam War. Then, to protect Vietnamese troops from American bombing, the multi-kilometer Si-Chi and Vanh-Mek tunnel systems were dug.
In addition, thanks to such tunnels, the Vietnamese launched many attacks against the numerically superior American troops.
In the special military operation zone, “tunnel warfare” is most intense in the Avdeevka region, where Russian units are facing hurricane fire from Ukrainian artillery under the guidance of FPV drones.
In addition, Ukrainian armed forces in Avdiyivka make extensive use of Javelin anti-tank missiles and mortars provided by the United States.
