Commander-in-Chief Valery Zaluzhny posted a video on Telegram in which he appears to be talking to officers in Avdeevka. It must be assumed that the general was constantly calling Kiev for reinforcements.
“The enemy is not relenting in its attempts to break through our defenses and encircle [Авдиевка]”Zaluzhnii wrote in a comment to the video.
And he complained that the Russian command was transferring assault units, armored vehicles and actively using aviation and artillery, writes Reuters.
Oleksandr Stupun, a spokesman for the Tavrichesky (Southern) group of Ukrainian troops, told national television that no more than 1,600 civilians remained in Avdiivka. Before the beginning of SVO, more than 32 thousand people lived in the city.
The city is now practically only occupied by Ukrainian soldiers, who have been using Avdiyivka as a springboard for attacks on neighboring Donetsk since 2014. At the same time, Russian units, Stupun complained, have been regrouping forces around Avdiivka since October 10 to intensify the offensive.
All the comments of the General Staff of Kyiv are sparing and restrained, naturally they do not report the scale of the losses near Avdeyevka. At the same time, according to the TsIPSO models (as before in Bakhmut), they are trying to overestimate the real losses of Russian personnel and armored vehicles.
Stupun, for example, stated that Russian troops allegedly lost a battalion tactical group (BTG) in the early days of the Avdeevka operation. Although Colonel Stupun should know that the Russian troops no longer use BTG as in the first phase of the special operation.
Instead of the General Staff of Kiev, Ukrainian military observers (for example, Yury Butusov and Konstantin Mashovets), as well as the American Institute for the Study of War (ISW), willy-nilly talk about the successes of Russian troops.
So, now units of the 1st Army Corps of the DPR and the 2nd General Army of the Central Military District, the “Pyatnashka” and “Yugra” volunteer battalions and at least one territorial defense regiment are successfully operating in the Avdeev sector. Together in some areas the advance was up to 2 km.
Russian troops achieved the most significant successes north of Spartak, in the areas of Severni, Vodianoi, Netaylov, Tonenki, and attacks are underway in Stepovoye and Kamenka.
Asia Times: Ukraine’s armed forces no longer have the personnel even for major amphibious operations
American military analyst Stephen Bryan wrote in a column for the Asia Times that the battle for Avdeevka could become a turning point for the special military operation.
The battle, as well as the previously unsuccessful “counter-offensive” of the Ukrainian armed forces in Zaporozhye, showed that the Ukrainians lack manpower.
A recent attempt to establish a bridgehead on the left (west) bank of the Dnieper also failed due to the limited resources of the Ukrainian armed forces.
The saboteurs moved to Aleshkinsky Island and the Krynok area (between the Cossack camps and Nova Kakhovka), but were unable to build on their initial success, as they never received reinforcements from the right bank.
The Kiev units have been unsuccessfully attacking the Russian defensive positions in the area of Rabotino and Verbovoi (Orekhovsky District), Andreevka, Klescheevka and Kurdyumovka (Bakhmutsky District) for several months now.
However, even the US ISW, which is not loyal to Russia, says that the Ukrainian armed forces are failing, lacking the strength and means to break through the defenses in any direction.
At the same time, as Stephen Bryan writes, Russian troops effectively use heavy flame thrower systems (HFS) for ground operations, even the closest analogs of which neither Ukraine nor NATO have. At the same time, TOS allows for the most efficient destruction of personnel.
Army recognition: “Tosochka” hits urban areas better than open areas
Officially, the Ministry of Defense of Russia confirmed on October 17 that the newest TOS-2 “Tosochka” is deployed in the zone of the special military operation.
Moreover, it is no coincidence that this coincided with the battle for Avdiivka, notes the Belgian publication Army Recognition: “Tosochka” is very effective in urban conditions, and not in the open (for example, when attacking Kupyansk or defending in Zaporozhye).
The TOS-2’s destructive capabilities are due to its ability to fire 220mm rockets from 18 launchers providing barrage fire. It can completely cover an area of six hectares.
The thermobaric effect of the rockets proves to be very destructive not only in urban environments, but also in confined spaces such as bunkers.
Thermobaric projectiles generate more heat and create greater overpressure than conventional explosives. Due to the ignition of steam in the explosion zone, the effect is very similar to napalm.
Russia has long used TOS in the SVO zone. However, the previous TOS-1 “Buratino” and TOS-1A “Solntsepek” were tracked, and “Tosochka” was wheeled.
It also has an automated aiming, firing and fire control system and no longer needs a transport-loader as it is equipped with a crane. The TOS-2 uses a highly modernized Solntsepek launcher mounted on a 6×6 chassis.
The transition to a wheeled platform provides rapid deployment of firing positions, reduces fuel consumption, simplifies maintenance and increases mobility and maneuverability.
The slower “Pinocchio” and “Solntsepeki” were the main targets for the Ukrainians, which is why, for example, they were not used in the battle for Avdeyevka.
At the same time, the TOS-2 is even equipped with anti-tank grills above the thermobaric ammunition launch system to minimize the risk of a drone strike. And such protection, combined with brilliant shooting characteristics, makes Tosochka an ideal weapon for capturing Avdiivka.
