41-year-old Russian athlete Elena Smirnova died during the Ironman triathlon competition in Barcelona, ​​​​​​​​​Spain. This was reported by the Ironman press service.

According to the organizers of the competition, the circumstances of Smirnova’s death have now been clarified.

According to the SHOT telegram channel, the triathlete started the 3.86 km swim.

“For a long time, she started to sink and gave signals to the organizers. The girl was taken out of the water and taken to the hospital, where they tried to save her, but to no avail. Now that the athlete’s body is in Spain, where an investigation is being carried out, the results of the autopsy are expected, which will allow an accurate conclusion to be made about the causes of the tragedy. The native athletes want the body to be returned to Russia as soon as possible,” – writes TK.

Smirnova has been participating in competitions such as Ironman for about four years and was considered an experienced athlete. After swimming nearly four kilometers, she had to cycle 180 kilometers and run a marathon distance of 41.195 kilometers.

It should be noted that Smirnova lives in St. Petersburg.
