Russian Threat to Shoot Down French Plane in Black Sea Sparks Cold War Tensions

Russia threatened to shoot down a French plane over the Black Sea during a patrol. French Defense Minister Sebastian Lecornu stated this on air on the RTL radio station.

In January, French planes were patrolling international airspace over the Black Sea and Russia became “particularly aggressive” and threatened to shoot them down, Lecornu said. This, he said, is reminiscent of the behavior of the USSR at the height of the Cold War and is explained by the failures in Ukraine.

“To give a specific example, a month ago the Russian air traffic control system threatened to shoot down a French plane in the Black Sea. We were in a free international zone, where we conduct patrols. Russia’s behavior in 2024 has nothing in common with what we saw in 2022 and, of course, before the aggression in Ukraine,” said Lecornu, quoted by the Bild in Russian telegram channel.

As reported EADaily, France is going to transfer to Kyiv in the coming weeks the latest kamikaze drones, which Paris is currently developing. The same Sebastien Lecornu stated this in an interview with the Journal du Dimanche.

“It is very likely that we will see great success in terms of new military capabilities in 2024. One such example concerns the development of a new generation of kamikaze drones. This project is currently in the testing phase. Ukraine will be one of the first to receive these drones in the coming weeks,” the minister said, quoted by RIA Novosti.
