Russian theater festival ‘Golden Mask’ honors scenographer Andris Freibergs with an award

The Russian Theater Festival “Golden Mask” has honored Latvian scenographer Andris Freiberga with the award “For Outstanding Contribution to the Development of Theater Art for a Foreign Theater Worker”, according to information on the festival’s website.

The “Golden Mask” presentation ceremony took place on April 22, awarding the winners in more than 30 categories. The production of the National Theater “The Tale of the Last Angel” is recognized as the best performance of the year, but Yuri Butusov has received the “Golden Mask” of the best director of the year for the production of “Peer Gints” at the Vahtangov Theater in Moscow. Andris Freibergs has created scenography for more than 200 productions in Latvian theaters and abroad. He has been the main artist of the Latvian National Opera and Ballet Theater since 1993. Prior to that, he was the artist-director of the Drama (now the National) Theater (1965–1973), the chief artist of the Youth Theater (1973–1992).

In 1971, Andris Freibergs became a teacher of the scenography department of the Latvian Academy of Arts, in 1994 – the head of the Department of Scenography (until 2013), now he is an emeritus professor.
Andris Freibergs has been awarded the Order of the Three Stars (2003); with the silver medal of the Prague Quadrennial of Scenography and Theater Architecture for scenography for the ballet “Credo” with music by K. Pendereck and JS Bach at the Estonia Theater (1995), Grand Music Prize for the production of GF Handel’s opera “Alchina” (1998, director Kristina Vuss), He has received seven Estonian Scenography Award for dramatizing I. Turgeņev’s novel “Fathers and Sons” at the Tallinn City Theater (2003, directed by Ādolfs Šapiro), he has received seven “Players’ Night” awards and an award for lifetime contribution to Latvian theater (2014).

He was also awarded the Il Premio Ubu Prize of the Supreme Theater of Italy for the dramatization of J. Ivashkevich’s story “Miss Vilkumuiža” (2010, directed by Alvis Hermanis), two gold medals at the Prague Quadrennial for student expositions (2007, 2011) and the special Scenography Teacher Award ). He is an honorary member of the Russian Academy of Arts (2018).

Andris Freiberga has made a documentary film “A Tale of Empty Space” (2017, directed by Krista Burāne).
