Russian tennis players Alexander Shevchenko and Roman Safiullin made it to the second round of the Masters series tournament in Madrid with a prize pool of over €7.7 million.

22-year-old Shevchenko (96th in the ATP rankings) for the first time overcame the first round of the Masters, defeating the American Jeffrey Wolfe with a score of 6:4, 6:4.

Safiullin defeated Chilean Nicolas Harry in three sets – 6:2, 3:6, 6:3. The Russian occupies 112th place in the world ranking and has also not previously reached the second round of the series tournaments.

Shevchenko’s next opponent will be Czech Jiri Legechka (37th racket of the world), and Safiullina – American Tommy Paul (17th).

Djokovic pulls out of Madrid Masters after defeat in Banja Luka

The Russians Daniil Medvedev, Andrey Rublev and Karen Khachanov will start the tournament from the second round.

The winner of the tournament in Madrid will receive 1,000 ranking points and more than €1.1 million in prize money.

Later on Thursday Aslan Karatsev will play his first round match in Madrid against Serb Laszlo Djere.

The Fonbet betting company accepts bets on Karatsev’s victory with odds of 2.25, and on Dyeré’s win with odds of 1.65.
