Daria Kasatkina, Russia’s top female tennis player, said in an interview on Monday that she is gay.
The tennis player, who is currently ranked 12th in the world, said that he is in a relationship with a woman and can no longer live in a “closet.” The 25-year-old athlete also spoke out against attitudes towards homosexuality and restrictions on LGBTQ rights in Russia.
“So many topics are taboo in Russia. The idea that someone wants to be gay or becomes gay is ridiculous. I don’t think anything in this world is easier than being straight. Seriously, if it really is a matter of choice, who would want to be gay anyway? Why would you make your life more difficult, especially in Russia? What would be the point of that?” – he said, then added that he would never dare to walk holding hands with his girlfriend in Russia.
Kasatkina said she was speaking out about her sexual orientation because she was inspired by Russian soccer player Nadya Karpova, who came out last month.
In Russia, they are currently preparing to further tighten the LGBTQ law, they would ban films and content depicting gays. (Guardian)
