The Russian ART-XC telescope at the Spektr-RG space observatory detected a brilliant X-ray source in the center of the Milky Way that turned out to be the 4U black hole 1755-338, the Russian space agency Roscosmos revealed on Sunday, RT reported.
The black hole in question was discovered by NASA’s Uhuru satellite, but in 1996 it stopped showing signs of activity and for more than 20 years was “asleep.”
Analyzing new data, astrophysicists from the Institute for Space Research (IKI) deduced that the telescope observed the start of a new flash of 4U 1755-338. Scientists contend that the black hole began to attract substance from a nearby star.
