Lukashenko said that Minsk was ready to host the weapons, days after Russian President Vladimir Putin said the weapons would be deployed July 7-8.
“Everything is ready. I think we will get what we asked for in a few days, and even a little more,” he said in comments cited by Belta news agency. Al JazeeraWednesday (14/6/2023).
Lukashenko warned he would not hesitate to use the weapon in response to a would-be aggressor.
“Why do we need them? To ensure that not a single foreign soldier ever sets foot on Belarusian soil again,” he stressed.
“God forbid I have to make a decision to use this weapon. But there will be no doubt if there is aggression against us,” he said.
This marks the first time since the fall of the Soviet Union that Moscow has moved warheads overseas.
Putin called the war in Ukraine a battle between Russia’s survival and the growing NATO alliance and said the West was pumping weapons into Ukraine in a proxy war with Moscow.
