Russian T-72 Ural Tank of First Production Series Being Restored for Service: Outdated Specs and Limitations

The Russian T-72 MBT of the first modification, which was developed half a century ago, is equipped with an outdated TPD-2-49 sight and does not have a fire control system.

On May 26, information appeared on the network about the T-72 Ural tanks of the first production series, which are being restored for service in the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation. On published The video shows that the tank was re-equipped with Kontakt-1 dynamic protection modules and a screen to protect the upper part of the turret.

Commenting on the video, Polish observers Defense 24 writethat the machine is still equipped with an outdated TPD-2-49 optical sight, does not have a fire control system, and a so-called monolithic tower is installed on it.

Such a tower is made of cast steel only and does not have quartz-filled “sand rods” recessed in the front. Instead, it has a uniform cast steel frontal armor.

The first versions of the T-72 “Ural” tank (object 172M) entered mass production in 1973 – exactly half a century ago. It was officially adopted by the USSR army two years later – in 1975.

Some experts believe that the T-72 is hopelessly outdated. First of all, they note a power plant that is weak by today’s standards – the installed V-84-1 engine with a power of 840 hp produces only 18.9 hp. per ton, which is significantly inferior to the engines of modern tanks, which have 1500 hp.

As for the dynamic protection “Contact”, the experience of military operations has shown that it has an unreliable fastening, and active shelling from heavy machine guns can quickly “undress” a tank. In addition, “Contact” does not cover the rear of the side well, and it is too short to protect the armor behind the rinks.

Experts also noted the low rotation speed of the tower – it is about 16 degrees per second, while the much heavier tower of the German Leopard 2 rotates at a speed of 48 degrees.

In the bottom line, the T-72 “Ural” tank of the first series in the framework of modern combat, when mobility and the ability to withstand modern anti-tank weapons come to the fore, will be difficult to compete with more advanced MBT models.

Earlier it was reported that a video appeared on the network with a Russian T-72B3 tank from the Western Military District with a metal screen on the tower, which the Ukrainian military calls “brazier”. Protection “Contact-1” was installed on the screen in order to protect the crew from blows from above.
