Russian tennis star Daria Karatkina, who was second in the world for a period in 2018, has to this day hidden her sexual orientation.
The World Twelve announced on the Russian journalist Viktor Kravchenko’s Youtube channel that she has a girlfriend.
– There are many topics that are taboo in Russia. This is one of the most important, she says in the clip.
– The idea of being gay, it’s just ridiculous. Nothing is as simple as being heterosexual. Honestly. If it had been optional, no one would be gay, especially not in Russia. Why make life harder than it is?
Karatkina posted a picture on Instagram with love Natalia Zabijako a while later.
The reason why she chose to publish her position is simple.
– Being able to feel peace inside is the only thing that matters. Everyone else can go to hell.
There is no legislation banning homosexuality in Russia, but discrimination on the grounds of sexual orientation is common in the country and as recently as 2020, it was written into the Russian constitution that a marriage is a union between a man and a woman.
