Russian Submarine Fires Missile in Sea of Japan

TOKYO, KOMPAS.com – Russian submarines fire cruise missiles during exercises in the Sea of Japan, the Russian Ministry of Defense said on Thursday (4/14/2022).

News agency AFP reported that Russia fired the missile amid tensions with Japan over its support for Ukraine.

The Russian Ministry of Defense announced that two submarines in Russia’s far east, the Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky and Volkov, fired Kalibr cruise missiles from underwater at targets.

They also uploaded video footage of the missile coming out of the sea as the submarine crew simulated being hit by a missile attack.

Japan joined the West in imposing tough sanctions on Russia, hosting several hundred Ukrainians fleeing the war, and sending in non-lethal weapons military aid.

Last Friday (8/4/2022), Japan announced new sanctions including a ban on Russian coal, significant energy imports, and the expulsion of eight Russian diplomats for war crimes in Ukraine.

Russia announced in March that because of Japan’s response to the conflict in Ukraine, it was abandoning longstanding diplomatic efforts to reach a peace treaty that formally ended World War II with Japan.

Those efforts have been hampered by a dispute over four islands controlled by Russia, which Japan calls the Northern Territories.
