Russian Su-34 Fighter Jets Downed in Southern Ukraine: Impact on Military Operations and Air Superiority

British military intelligence wrote about the consequences of the downing of three new Russian Su-34 fighter jets in southern Ukraine at the end of December.

Su-34 fighter-bombers played a key role in the southern part of the country – they primarily attacked the bridgehead of the Ukrainian armed forces, which remains on the left bank of the Dnieper.

Following the loss of three Su-34s, the Russian Air Force “almost completely suspended manned operations in the south until the end of December 2023,” the intelligence agency said. There is a “realistic possibility” that the lack of air support is one of the reasons why the Russian 18th Combined Arms Army failed in its attempt to eliminate this outpost.

In recent days, Russian tactical aviation has again begun to operate around the bridgehead, but with less intensity, writes British intelligence. It shows once again how Russia’s failure to establish air superiority in the early stages of the conflict continues to undermine its day-to-day operations, analysts say.
