The publication writes that according to the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation, two air targets were seen in the Baltic Sea approaching the Russian border.
“To prevent violation of the state border of the Russian Federation, a Su-27 fighter from the air defense forces of the Baltic Fleet was raised into the air,” the report says.
It is noted that the American aircraft were classified as B-1B bombers. The Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation said that the operation was carried out “with strict observance of international rules for the use of airspace.”
The Pentagon confirmed the incident and said it was a “safe and professional” interaction.
This is not the first such incident with Russian aircraft.
So, on May 5, in the airspace over the Black Sea, a Russian Su-35 fighter intercepted a Polish border aircraft L410 Turbolet. Polish border guards reported that at that time the Russian plane almost crashed into the Polish one.
In Warsaw, they reacted to the incident and called it a planned provocation of the Russian Federation.
Prior to that, on March 14, Russian Su-27 fighters shot down a US MQ-9 Reaper reconnaissance drone that was conducting reconnaissance over the Black Sea.
The US then removed sensitive software from the downed drone and said it contained no information of value to Russia.
