Russian strikes on HIMARS – wishful thinking and reassurances

Russian Ministry of Defense probably trying to assuage concerns that the effective use of American HIMARS on the part of Ukraine provokes the Russian military. Such a goal sees the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) behind the allegations of destruction of the launchers in Ukraine.

Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said Russian forces had destroyed six US HIMARS systems and other Western-supplied military equipment in Ukraine in a conference call with the leadership of the Russian armed forces on August 2. The Russian Ministry of Defense also released a video in which it claimed to have destroyed a building that housed two HIMARS launchers in the Kharkiv region on August 1.

The allegations were rejected by the Ukrainian side, and the head of the Ukrainian command “South” Andriy Kovalchuk stated that Russian forces have not destroyed any HIMARS.

Ukraine’s General Directorate of Military Intelligence (GUR) also reported that Russian defense authorities cover up the losses of Russian servicementransporting the wounded Russians in civilian vehicles and misreporting in the media the number of casualties caused by the Ukrainian HIMARS strikes.

The effective use of HIMARS by the Ukrainians has already provoked many military bloggers and correspondents to express concern about the effectiveness of air defense systems of the Russians and threats to Russian logistics. And these strikes are likely demoralizing Russian servicemen on the ground.
