Russian state news agency wrongly celebrates victory over Ukraine

Russian state media apparently mistakenly announced Russia’s victory over Ukraine and then deleted most of the articles. The text could not be found at state news agency Ria Novosti on Monday, the German news agency DPA determined. The Uzbek edition of the Russian media outlet Sputnik still read the probably prepared comment: “Russia has restored its unity – the tragedy of 1991, which terrible catastrophe in our history (…) has been overcome.”

The commentary appeared under the headline “The Attack of Russia and the New World” and was written by Ria columnist Pyotr Akopov. Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered the invasion of Ukraine on Thursday. “Vladimir Putin has taken a historic responsibility without exaggeration by not leaving the solution of the Ukraine issue to future generations,” Akopov wrote in the commentary.

“Did anyone in the old European capitals like Paris and Berlin seriously believe that Moscow would give up Kiev?” he continues. “Now this problem is gone – Ukraine has returned to Russia.”

According to Western intelligence services, Russia’s advance into the neighboring country is slower than Russian leaders had expected.

Research by the German news agency DPA shows that the article was online at Ria Novosti for more than 24 hours before it was removed.
