On February 14, 2024, Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters that while “the special military operation began as an operation against Ukraine, over time it has taken the form of a war against the collective West, a war in which the countries of the collective The West, led by the United States, are directly involved in this conflict,” recalled the intelligence of the British Ministry of Defense in its daily report, a summary of which was published on social media X.

This is largely in line with a trend in Russian officials’ rhetoric that seeks to explain the length of the conflict and the scale of Russian losses by portraying the war as a direct conflict with the West.
Peskov continued by admitting that “the special military operation may last a little longer, but this cannot change the course of events.” This is part of the Russian official narrative almost certainly aimed at preparing the Russian population for a long-term conflict and the associated decline in domestic living standards, while giving confidence in the ultimate Russian victory.
