Russian spies are using hackers to attack law enforcement computer systems in Ukraine to identify and obtain evidence related to possible Russian war crimes.

Details: Hackers working with Russia’s foreign, domestic and military intelligence agencies have stepped up digital intrusion campaigns against the Ukrainian Prosecutor General’s Office and departments that document war crimes.
Direct speech Shchigolya: “There has been a change in direction, from a focus on energy facilities to law enforcement agencies, which previously were not so often targets of attacks.
This shift toward courts, prosecutors and law enforcement suggests that hackers are gathering evidence of Russian war crimes in Ukraine.
The groups that we have identified as such are part of the Russian GRU and FSB.”
Details: The espionage activities will be outlined in a future report by the State Service for Special Communications, due to be published on Monday.
The report, a copy of which was seen by Reuters, said the hackers also tried to collect intelligence on Russian citizens arrested in Ukraine with the goal of “helping these individuals avoid prosecution and return them back to Russia.”
Shchigol declined to say which units were targeted by the hacker campaign, citing security concerns. The number of documented cybersecurity incidents rose 123% in the first six months of this year compared to the second half of 2022, he said.
Shchigol said Russian hackers targeted government agencies and tried to gain access to their email servers.
There is also evidence that Russian hackers were accessing private CCTV cameras in Ukraine to monitor the results of long-range missile and drone strikes.
