Greek intelligence told local media that people with Russian passports had been tracking the blogger while he was in Greece.
Opposition blogger Roman Protasevich, arrested in Belarus, was followed by unknown persons with Russian passports. The surveillance lasted several days, during which he rested in Crete, and from where he returned on a flight Athens-Vilnius on 23 May. It is reported by VICE World News with reference to the Greek special services.
The Greek National Intelligence Service (EYP) told local media that at least three unknown persons had been following Protasevich in Athens since his arrival ahead of the May 9 conference. After the conference ended on May 16, Protasevich went on vacation for several days to Crete with his girlfriend, where they were also under surveillance by what is believed to be Russian or Belarusian spies, a Greek official said.
It is noted that Protasevich returned to Vilnius four days after the end of the economic conference in Athens, “which was attended by many Belarusian dissidents.” This led to the conclusion of Greek intelligence investigators that he was under surveillance in Greece at all times.
Shortly before the flight, according to Protasevich’s colleagues, he saw how unknown persons followed him through the Athens airport and took pictures. The team is believed to have watched the blogger to determine which flight he would fly over Belarusian airspace.
“As we collect CCTV footage from hotels, from Crete and from the airport, it is becoming clear that they were being followed by intelligence specialists with Russian passports,” said an Interior Ministry spokesman, who asked not to be named.
“We believe that these people acted on behalf of Belarus, and they managed to establish that Protasevich was on board the plane when it flew over Belarus,” he added.
An intelligence spokesman said the Greek services were outraged by a similar operation in the European capital.
The intelligence also noted that it would collect all the evidence “to be part of any response from the EU as a whole.”
Let us remind you that on May 23, the Belarusian authorities forcibly landed an Athens-Vilnius plane in Minsk, aboard which were an activist and opposition journalist Roman Protasevich and his companion, Russian woman Sofia Sapega.
After the arrest, the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Belarus published video with Protasevich… In the video, a young man sits in front of the camera and tells how well he is treated in the pre-trial detention center.
Meanwhile, Alexander Lukashenko accused Protasevich in the preparation of a “bloody mutiny”, calling him an extremist.
And the Belarusian KGB accused Protasevich in participation in battles in Donbass… He allegedly fought in the Azov volunteer battalion. The founder and first commander of the Azov battalion, Andrei Biletsky, said that Protasevich was in Shirokino with Azov as a journalist.
