MOSCOW – Satellite Soviet Union a 30-year-old orbiting about 1,400 kilometers above Earth was reported to have disintegrated after colliding with space debris.
The cataclysmic collision of the two satellite debris is expected to create thousands of dangerous new debris in outer space.
Astrophysicist and space debris expert Jonathan McDowell said that the old Soviet Union satellite that was destroyed by space debris is known as Kosmos-2143 or Kosmos-2145.
The collision will simultaneously produce more space junk that threatens the operation of other satellites.
“This new fragment comes from Kosmos-2143 or Kosmos-2145 which are two of the 8 Strela-1M satellites launched with the same rocket,” McDowell said via the X account that was formerly Twitter and quoted by Space, Sunday (3/9/2023)
Space junk is the remains of machine debris left by humans in outer space. The debris appears in the form of malfunctioning or malfunctioning satellites after being launched from Earth.
Currently, there are still many old Soviet-era satellites that are more than 60 years old in orbit, making them a threat to new satellites that are still functioning.
In addition, the Soviet Union’s satellites and spent rockets left at altitudes exceeding 800 kilometers above the earth have worried space researchers.
