Russian soprano Anna Netrebko has started legal proceedings against the New York opera house Metropolitan. The artist saw his collaboration suspended in the wake of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
Ms. Netrebko filed suit in New York on Friday, claiming at least $360,000 in damages, according to US media. Opera officials retorted that the procedure had no basis.
The singer has already managed to obtain partial compensation from the Metropolitan Opera, through the union of opera actors (US Opera Performers’ Union).
The famous Manhattan institution had indicated in March 2022, shortly after the start of the war in Ukraine, that it was suspending its collaboration with Anna Netrebko. She had asked the interested party to reconsider her public support for Russian President Vladimir Putin.
The opera had specified that it had not been executed and had therefore withdrawn it from future programming. The director, Peter Gelb, had spoken of an “artistic loss”, while adding that he saw no other way out.
