Two Russian soldiers have been arrested on suspicion of killing a family of nine, including two young childrenat their home in the Russian-occupied eastern Ukrainian town of Volnovakha.
Russian media reported that the murders took place last Friday night and that the suspects used machine guns with silencers to kill the family at night in their sleep.
This is the first known case of Russia arresting its own soldiers on suspicion of killing Ukrainian civilianssince it invaded in 2022, despite abundant evidence collected by independent human rights groups, journalists and the United Nations showing that Russian soldiers systematically committed war crimes during their invasion of Ukraine.
Russian prosecutors said the two detained soldiers were from Russia’s Far East and that the reason for the killings appeared to be the result of an “internal conflict”.
Graphic photos circulated online of the aftermath of the killings show blood-spattered and shot bodies in beds, some of them still hugged.
Ukrainian officials have already said they believe Russian soldiers killed all members of the Kapkanets family on October 27 because they refused to give them their house. The Ukrainian government said in a statement that it had also launched an investigation into the crime.
Astra, an independent Russian news channel on Telegram, quoted neighbors of the Volnovakha victims as blaming Russian soldiers for the killings.
