Russian Soldier Vows to Burn Passport and Adopt American Name due to Frustration with War in Ukraine

A Russian soldier has vowed to burn his passport and adopt an American name because of his frustration with the war in Ukraine, according to an alleged phone call intercepted by the Ukrainian military.

In a recording of the conversation released by Ukraine’s Directorate of Military Intelligence (DMI) last week, the soldier complained to his mother that Russia “can’t even secure a forest belt,” according to a translation published by The Kyiv Post on Wednesday.

In the call, the soldier’s mother tells her son that “something secretive” about “breaking through somewhere” was “discussed” during “meetings with Putin and the Security Council.” She says she has “absolutely no confidence in their word”.

The soldier’s mother says Russian media claims the Kupyansk city in the Kharkiv region, which Ukraine retook during its successful counter-offensive in September 2022, will soon be back in Russian hands. She then asks her son if the Russian army “really needs Kupyansk”.

“We can’t even secure a forest belt here, and they still want to take back Kupyansk,” the soldier replies.

After being informed of the invasion of Russian territory by pro-Ukrainian groups and the United States’ plans to send Abrams tanks to the battlefield to aid Ukraine’s war effort, the soldier said he hoped to sever ties with Russia after his service ended you are

“When I come back, I’m going to burn this Russian passport, I’m going to change my last name – I’m going to forget everything,” he says. “I’m going to give myself an English or an American last name.”

His mother sighs and replies, “Yes, I agree.”

The timing of the alleged call is unclear, although the US plan to send Abrams tanks to Ukraine was first announced in January. Newsweek was unable to independently verify the authenticity of the call or its content.

Last week’s recording is far from the only phone call that is said to include the complaints of a Russian soldier during a conversation with family. The GRU has issued several similar appeals to the public during the nearly 20-month war.

Last week, audio of an alleged call released by the GRU revealed a soldier admitting to his wife that he faked frontline videos to convince Russian military leaders of battlefield success that was not actually happening.

“I’ve also recorded bulls*** on my phone camera… but it’s a game,” the soldier said, according to The Kyiv Post. “I got everyone dressed, put them in position and went through the trenches shouting ‘dammit’ amazing everyone is fighting.”

In an alleged call released by the GRU in August, a Russian serviceman informed his mother that Moscow’s military leadership had told soldiers that the “crazy situation” of the war was “here to stay” until 2026.
