Russian soldier charged with war crimes

The indictment is against a 21-year-old officer who belonged to the tank battalion from the Moscow region, and who has been captured in Ukraine. The incident he is accused of is thus the murder of an unarmed civilian.

A 62-year-old Ukrainian was out on his bike, not far from his home in the village of Chupakhivka. The indictment claims that he was not wearing a weapon. At the same time, not far away, the Russian accused soldier and four friends of his have got into a car. The newspaper Die Zeit writes that the five were to flee after Ukrainian forces had attacked their unit.

As the unarmed Ukrainian cycled past, the Russian shot at him on the orders of a Russian officer, according to the prosecution.

According to the prosecution, the 21-year-old is said to have killed the 62-year-old man on February 28, when he was cycling along the roadside in the village of Chupachivka in northeastern Ukraine. He risks up to fifteen years in prison, according to Venice.

First indictment – 10,700 investigations

Her office has previously said it is investigating more than 10,700 alleged war crimes committed by Russian soldiers, and that more than 600 suspects have been identified.

Many of the alleged abuses came to light in April after Russian forces gave up trying to capture Kyiv and withdrew from the surrounding areas.

In the suburb of Butsja, among other things, mass graves were uncovered, and corpses were strewn in the streets. Residents have reported alleged killings, rapes, torture and mutilation.

Russia has rejected all allegations of war crimes.
