Russian schoolchildren have started a new school year with a new curriculum that is catching the eye of British intelligence.
Russian President Vladimir Putin himself was present at a school in the city of Solnezhnogorsk in the Moscow region, and spoke to 30 schoolchildren in a lecture referred to as “Important Conversations”.
The new Russian curriculum focuses on both military skills and the Kremlin’s view of Ukrainian history, writes the British Ministry of Defense in its daily intelligence update.
“An updated national history exam includes topics such as Crimea’s reunification with Russia and the special operation in Ukraine. The Russian parliament approved the curriculum last year,” the update reads.
Russia annexed the Krym peninsula in 2014, and then launched a massive war of aggression against all of Ukraine on February 24, 2022, which the Russians consistently refer to as a “special military operation.”
Both the annexation and the invasion violate international law, and have been strongly condemned by the West.

Kalashnikov and hand grenades
“A basic safety element is aimed at older students and includes a basic military training module. This includes the handling of , the use of hand grenades, operations with unmanned aerial vehicles and military first aid,” writes the British Ministry of Defence.
The school pupils will also be able to be visited by Russian war veterans who have taken part in the war of aggression against Ukraine.
Nothing new
Russia expert and senior researcher at Nupi, Jakub M. Godzimirski, says that there are already youth organizations in Russia that deal with the dissemination of propaganda and military training for Russian youth.
Godzimirski refers to a concrete organization, the Russian Youth Army (Yunarmiya), which aims to train future soldiers.
The organization receives government support directly from the Russian Ministry of Defense.
– This type of organization promotes many of the same things, so this type of initiative is nothing new. During the Soviet era, there were also similar measures aimed at children and young people, says Godzimirski to Nettavisen.
– When I went to school, we had a subject called defense preparations, which was about what to do if there was a war or a nuclear attack. It was part of the system, says Godzimirski, who grew up in the Eastern Bloc country of Poland during the Cold War.

The curriculum has three purposes
The British Ministry of Defense writes that the new curriculum has three purposes:
Indoctrinate the students with the Kremlin’s rationale for the special operation. Evoke a warlike mindset in the students. Reduce timelines for training with a view to further mobilization and deployment.
The British further write that the focus on operations with unmanned aerial vehicles shows that Russia has learned new lessons from the Ukraine war, and that unmanned aerial vehicles play an important role on the modern battlefield.
