/ world today news/ The first group of Russian sappers has started demining Palmyra, an informed source from Damascus reported, “Vzglyad” reported on Saturday (April 2).
“We can confirm that the first group of Russian sappers has arrived in Palmyra and has started demining the road that leads to the old part of the city,” an interlocutor told TASS.
On Friday, Syrian Engineer Corps Lieutenant Kasen Shpib, involved in demining the city, reported that half of Palmyra’s explosive devices have already been defused, but the sappers will not be able to do without the help of their Russian counterparts.
On Sunday, it was reported that Syrian troops and the popular militia were in full control of Palmyra. At the same time, planes of the Russian Air Force and the Air Force of Syria attacked Islamists retreating from Palmyra.
In the city, a significant part of the monuments in the historical-archaeological reserve survived, but the ethnographic museum was looted.
Russian President Vladimir Putin congratulated his Syrian counterpart Bashar al-Assad on the liberation of Palmyra and assigned Russian sappers to take part in demining the city.
Two groups of Russian sappers arrived in Syria this week. It was noted that the Russian military will use Uran-6 robotic complexes to demine the city.
