Russian S-500 Prometheus System Destroys Hypersonic targets in Ukraine War

As a full-scale war continues in Ukraine, the Russian S-500 Prometheus anti-aircraft missile system has allegedly demonstrated its ability to “destroy hypersonic targets.”

About this with reference to Russian propaganda media reports Army Recognition. The corresponding tests were carried out on February 22, 2024. If you believe the data presented, Prometheus successfully destroyed the R-29RMU2 Sineva ballistic missile launched by the K-114 Tula strategic nuclear submarine from the Laptev Sea. The missile was intercepted over the Chizha test site.

According to Russian data, during testing the S-500 “confirmed all expected performance characteristics and its readiness to withstand both current and future airborne threats.”

“The successful interception of the Sineva missile, an analogue of hypersonic targets, highlights the Prometheus’s potential to significantly enhance air defense capabilities,” the authors say.

The S-500 long- and medium-range anti-aircraft missile system was developed by the Almaz-Antey concern. It is positioned as a “new generation air defense system.” It is assumed that the complex is capable of hitting targets at a distance of up to 600 km.

The concept of the weapon is based on the principle of separately solving the problems of destroying ballistic and aerodynamic targets. The start of production of the S-500 Prometheus systems was reported in 2019. In the fall of 2021, the first S-500s began to enter the Russian armed forces.

Let us recall that it recently became known that Ukraine could modernize the old Soviet S-200 air defense systems and increase their range. It was with the help of such a missile that the Russian A-50 long-range radar detection and control aircraft was probably destroyed.
