Russian President Vladimir Putin’s Potential Visit to Turkey and the Renewal of the Grain Agreement

Russian President Vladimir Putin may visit Turkey in the coming days, reports the Turkish publication Nationality. This may be Putin’s first visit to a NATO member state since the start of a full-scale war in Ukraine.
Earlier, other Turkish media reported that Putin’s visit to Turkey could take place at the end of August.

During the visit, the topic of renewing the “grain agreement” is likely to be discussed.

Milliyet reports that Ankara has stepped up diplomatic work to revive the “grain initiative” ahead of Putin’s visit to Turkey. Thus, Turkey is conducting multilateral negotiations with interested parties in coordination with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Defense and the Ministry of Trade.

It should be noted that on July 17, Russia announced the “suspension” of its participation in the “grain agreement” due to alleged non-fulfillment of its terms. After that, the export of Ukrainian grain along the Black Sea was suspended, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed readiness to expand the agreement in a tripartite format. Russia then resorted to attacks on Ukrainian Black Sea ports.

At the same time, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced his intention to renew the grain agreement on an “expanded scale”. In particular, he called on the West to help make this initiative the basis of a ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine
