Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Russian President Vladimir Putin told Israeli Prime Minister (PM) Benjamin Netanyahu that Moscow wants to help prevent a humanitarian disaster in Gaza.

The Kremlin said Putin expressed Russia’s willingness to work to “end the Palestinian-Israeli confrontation and achieve a peaceful settlement through political and diplomatic means.”

The statement did not mention the ceasefire that Russia hopes to achieve by submitting a resolution to the UN Security Council.

But Putin briefed Netanyahu on conversations with the leaders of Iran, Egypt, Syria and the Palestinian Authority.

“Unanimous opinion has been expressed regarding the need for an early ceasefire and the establishment of a humanitarian ceasefire in order to provide immediate assistance to all those in need,” he said of the conversation, as quoted Reuters.

“There are also serious concerns about the possibility of the conflict escalating into a regional war.”

Earlier, Iranian state media said President Ebrahim Raisi told Putin in their conversation that supporting Palestine was Iran’s foreign policy priority but that “resistance” groups made their own independent decisions.

“There is a possibility that the conflict between Israel and Palestine will spread to other areas,” said Raisi.

Putin also spoke with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, whom he asked for help from Cairo in evacuating Russian citizens from Gaza.

The Kremlin chief was also seen discussing the Middle East and Ukraine at televised meetings with officials including his spy chief and defense minister.

The crisis has diverted some of the world’s attention from Russia’s war in Ukraine and given Moscow an opportunity to demonstrate its strong ties with all key players in the Middle East, establishing itself as a voice of peace and restraint.

The Kremlin has repeatedly blamed past US policy failures as the cause of the latest explosion of violence in the Middle East.
