Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Russian President Vladimir Putin voiced concern over a “catastrophic increase” in the number of civilian casualties in Israel and the Gaza Strip, after four days of fighting between Hamas and Israel.
During a telephone conversation with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, “emphasis was placed on the sharply deteriorating situation in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict zone”, the Kremlin said in a statement, quoted from AFPWednesday (11/10/2023).
“Deep concern was expressed regarding the continued escalation of violence and the increasing number of civilian casualties,” he added.
Putin and Erdogan have reiterated the need for an “immediate ceasefire” and “resumption of the negotiation process”, according to the Kremlin.
The Turkish presidency also said the two leaders had discussed “the worrying developments in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and the steps that should be taken to avoid escalation”.
Erdogan also said that “it would be a shame to target civilian installations and Turkey does not welcome such actions”.
Since Hamas’ attack on Israel on Saturday, the Israeli army has shelled the Gaza Strip in retaliation.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed to defeat the Palestinian Islamist movement “with force, a lot of force”.
Earlier on Tuesday, Putin called the creation of a Palestinian state “necessary” and stated that the new war between Israel and Hamas showed the “failure” of United States (US) policy in the Middle East.
