Russian President Vladimir Putin Signs Law Extending Conscription Age to 30 Years

Russian President Vladimir Putin has signed a law that provides for extending the conscription age to 30 years.

The enlistment age is raised from 27 to 30 years. The lower limit remains unchanged – 18 years, although back in December Defense Minister Sergej Shoigu suggested raising it to 21 years.

The State Duma supported setting 21 years as the lower limit in the first reading, but rejected this proposal in the second reading. Shoigu and Putin did not comment on this situation.

The publication “Verstka” expressed the assumption that the Ministry of Defense played a decisive role in the change of concept, which allegedly convinced President Vladimir Putin not to lower the minimum enlistment age.

The law will enter into force on January 1, 2024 and there will be no transition period.
