MOSCOW — President Vladimir Putin has announced that Russian scientists are on the verge of success in developing vaccines and preventive drugs against cancer. Putin, who announced that it will soon be made available to patients, did not reveal what cancers it might be useful for.

There are currently 6 approved vaccines in the world against the human papilloma virus, which causes some cancers, including cervical cancer. A vaccine is also available for hepatitis B, which causes liver cancer. Last year, the British government entered into an agreement with the German company BioNtech on an mRNA cancer vaccine. The plan is to provide 10,000 shots by 2030. The vaccine developed by pharmaceutical companies Moderna and Merck & Co. was found to be beneficial in the treatment of skin cancer in the experimental phase.
