According to the Finnish Iltalehti, the organization was formed during the Second World War in the Soviet Union to oppose the German intelligence and espionage organization, Abwehr.
According to British intelligence, the purpose of reviving Smersh is to track down Western spies in Russia.
The Soviet organization was officially disbanded immediately after the war in 1946, and before that worked to search for and arrest “suspicious persons”. Furthermore, the reports from the organization were sent directly to the Soviet dictator Joseph Stalin, who was not merciful in his treatment of any spies.
The Times refers to a video published last week that allegedly shows a young Russian man admitting to filming Russian air defense systems in the Belgorod area, near the Ukrainian border.
In the video, the man will say that he is willing to accept any punishment for his action, and in the background you can see two security guards with the Smersh logo on their jackets.
– Could lead to a major war
The British newspaper also writes that the Russian general Andrei Gurulyov confirms that an organization similar to Smersh is now operating in Russian-occupied areas in eastern Ukraine.
Russian Telegram accounts also speculate on the revival of the spy organization, write Evening newspaper.
