CNN reported that Russian President Vladimir Putin recently told the Russian media “Kommersant” (Kommersant) that he had proposed a new group leader for the mercenary organization “Wagner Group” that had previously staged a mutiny. The person, whose call sign is Sedoy, is said to be the “de facto commander” of the group.

Wagner’s chief, Prigezin, failed to launch a mutiny in June. Judging from what Putin said in the “Business Daily”, Putin seems to have created a rift between Wagner’s senior mercenaries and Prigezin. According to reports, Putin “proposed” a new leader during a meeting with senior Wagner members including Prigozin five days after the failed mutiny.

Putin is said to have said that among the operational options offered to the Wagner group was that the group could have continued to fight under their “immediate commander,” who was “grey-haired,” so that the group could come together. One place and continue to operate, “nothing will change, they will be led by the same people who have always been the de facto commander.”

Putin added that several Wagnerians “nodded” in agreement when they heard his proposal.

Citing sanctions documents from the European Union and France, CNN pointed out that “grey hair” whose real name is Andrey Troshev is a retired Russian military officer and a founding member of the Wagner Group, with a high position in the group. The EU sanctions relate to the role of “gray hair” in Syria, where Wagner supported the Syrian regime.

The British sanctions from June 2022 also pointed out that “Grey Hair” is an important executive of the Wagner Group, supports the Syrian regime and oppresses Syrian civilians. In addition, “Grey Hair” was also found to have belonged to the “Northwestern Federal District” of the Russian Ministry of the Interior, and had also participated in the wars in Chechnya and Afghanistan, and had military exploits in both places.

In December 2016, “gray hair” is believed to have been invited to the Kremlin, where he was photographed in the same frame as Putin. Ukraine has imposed sanctions on “gray hair” since the end of February this year.

At present, the whereabouts of Wagner’s leader Prigezin is still a mystery. He was previously believed to have been transferred to Belarus in accordance with the withdrawal agreement, but the Belarusian president later stated that Prigojin was in Russia. According to CNN, it is rumored that there are pictures showing that Prigojin’s house in St. Petersburg was raided by the police, making it difficult to understand his current situation.
