Russian President Putin held a summit meeting with President Xi Jinping in Beijing, China on the 18th.
The media captured two naval officers following President Putin, each carrying a nuclear bag.
This nuclear bag, called ‘Cheget’, is a secure communication tool that connects the president and high-ranking military officials.
The president always carries it with him, but it is rarely exposed to the media, leading to analysis that the exposure may have been intentional.
President Putin said that he and President Xi Jinping held a separate bilateral meeting after the opening ceremony of the Belt and Road Summit held in China and discussed the recent rapidly changing situation in the Middle East.
President Putin also held bilateral meetings with the leaders of Hungary, Thailand, and Vietnam. President Putin, who brought about international isolation last year due to the attack on Ukraine, appears to be expanding the scope of his activities in the wake of the Israel-Hamas war.
Meanwhile, on the 18th local time, the Russian House of Representatives unanimously passed a bill to withdraw ratification of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT).
Withdrawal of CTBT ratification means the possibility of Russia resuming nuclear testing, a process that will be completed once it is reviewed by the Senate and signed by President Putin.
The Wall Street Journal, an American media outlet, reported that “President Putin may pull out the card to resume nuclear testing as a way to block U.S. arms support to Ukraine.”
There are growing concerns that if Russia resumes nuclear testing, tensions will increase not only in Ukraine, which is at war, but also on the Korean Peninsula, which is adjacent to Russia.
