Russian Politician Fined for Hanging Pasta on Ears During Putin’s Speech

Moscow

A politician Russia sentenced to a fine of 150,000 rubles (Rp 27 million) after posting a video of himself watching the President’s speech Vladimir Putin while hanging pasta on both ears. The politician appealed against the fine.

As reported AFPFriday (14/4/2023), what a politician named Mikhail Abdalkin did sparked a problem because Russia has an expression that says ‘hang noodles on someone’s ear’ which means lying to someone.

Abdalkin, a member of parliament for the Samara region, was tried and found guilty of “discrediting” the Russian military and government. In March, he was fined 150,000 rubles by a local court.

The case began when Abdalkin posted a video of himself watching Putin’s State of the Union speech, with pasta appearing to hang from Abdalkin’s ears.

In the video posted last February, Abdalkin can be seen nodding and giving a serious look as Putin lambastes the West’s “colonialism, dictatorship and centuries-old hegeomime” — rhetoric the Russian leader always uses to justify invasion of Ukraine.

The video was posted by Abdalkin on a number of his social media, from YouTube, Facebook to VKontakte, which is famous in Russia. In his post, he included a line of irony that read: “I totally agree. What a speech.”

Regarding the sentence handed down to him, Abdalkin called it ‘illegal and politically motivated’.
