Russian Politician Alexei Navalny Absent from Court Hearing on Lawsuit Against Correctional Colony

Director of the Anti-Corruption Foundation (FBK) Ivan Zhdanov said that Russian politician Alexei Navalny did not participate in the court hearing on his claim in the Kovrov city court in the Vladimir region.

“Today Navalny is not in court on his own claim. We don’t know the reasons,” Zhdanov wrote on social networks.

Kovrov City Court is considering Navalny’s lawsuit against correctional colony No. 6 in Melekhovo, where he is being held. Navalny’s press secretary Kira Yarmysh reportedthat “Alexey usually participates in Kovrov courts via video link [из комнаты в колонии № 6], until today he was not there.” According to her, the court hearing was postponed.

On October 13, the Basmanny Court of Moscow arrested three lawyers of Alexei Navalny – Alexei Liptser, Vadim Kobzev and Igor Sergunin – on charges of participation in an “extremist community.” According to investigators, the lawyers “regularly transferred information” from the politician to his team. Navalny’s associates believe that the persecution of lawyers was part of a plan to completely isolate the politician.
